In dark times will there also be singing? is a participatory sound installation by American composer and sound artist William Dougherty. Passers-by in a public space are invited to sing a song that brings them joy. The participant is anonymously recorded. The voice of a previous participant then plays through a speaker in the space. The recordings are collected and are immediately available for playback. A sonic collage of the recordings is then crafted and shaped into a new composition for pre-recorded voices and live instruments which is performed by members of the community.
In 2021, Dougherty brought In dark times will there also be singing? to the Rail Park and park - goers recorded their own joyful song.
